Kremlin intensifies information attacks on Moldova ahead of elections

russia is preparing an unprecedented interference in the parliamentary elections in Moldova, scheduled for September 28. This was officially announced by the country’s President Maia Sandu following a meeting of the Supreme Security Council.

▫️ According to her, the kremlin is investing in a number of political projects to push its loyal figures into parliament. These projects are being coordinated from a single center, financed through schemes involving the fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor, who is under sanctions, and accompanied by disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, and so on.

▫️ russian propagandists reacted to Sandu’s statement immediately — already accusing her of “fearing defeat” and mocking the threat of interference. This is a typical tactic that only confirms the existence of a coordinated information operation.

russia is trying to derail Moldova’s course towards European integration and maintain its influence in the country. Systematic interference in the internal affairs of Eastern European states has long been part of the kremlin’s foreign policy. russian propaganda has already attempted to sow destabilization ahead of the presidential elections in Poland, as well as during the election campaign in Romania.

Earlier, the Center published an analytical report on the channels and methods of spreading russian propaganda in Moldova.
