Why Russia wants to imprison more minors

In russia, there are plans to lower the age of criminal responsibility for “desecration of military glory monuments” from 16 to 14 years.

▫️This initiative by the russian ministry of justice is explained by the fact that most “crimes against monuments” are committed by minors.

In reality, lowering the age of criminal responsibility is another element of kremlin’s systemic policy of “tightening the screws.” Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, russian authorities have consistently strengthened criminal legislation, primarily for “crimes” of disloyalty to russian policies. In this way, kremlin seeks to make any form of dissent impossible.

Moreover, russian authorities are directly interested in having as many prisoners as possible in russian jails, as correctional facilities are one of the key sources for replenishing russia’s army for the war against Ukraine.
