Digital “Iron Curtain”: Russia wants to limit calls from abroad

Such calls would only be allowed with the prior consent of the recipient. The formal aim is to combat phone fraud. However, the real consequence of this initiative could be a systematic effort to isolate russians from the outside world.
▫️ In recent years, russian authorities have been gradually building a digital “iron curtain”: creating a “sovereign internet,” blocking VPNs and Western messengers, and restricting access to foreign services and media. A ban on international calls is yet another step in this direction.
Communication restrictions and increased control are classic features of authoritarian regimes. These new limitations, introduced under the guise of fraud prevention, will further enable the government to tighten pressure on the population and deepen its information isolation.
