Russia can’t reach agreement with new Syrian government
For the first time since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, a Russian delegation has arrived in Syria. The main topic of discussion was likely the future of Russian military bases, but the talks appear to have been unsuccessful.
▫️ Russian delegation members officially stated that the issue of Russian bases in Syria requires “further meetings with the Syrian authorities.” However, Western media reports suggest that discussions about the bases have reached a deadlock.
Syria’s state news agency, for its part, emphasized that the dialogue focused on “Moscow’s ability to restore trust between Russia and the Syrian people through compensation, reconstruction, and recovery measures.”
Despite the optimistic tone of Russian statements and the soft rhetoric regarding Russia’s attitude toward the new Syrian government, it appears that, at least for now, Russia has been unable to resolve the key issue with the new Syrian government and restore its lost influence in the Middle East.
