Kremlin continues to lose influence in Abkhazia
The parliament of the Russian-occupied self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia has refused to ratify an investment agreement with Russia that sparked protests and led to the resignation of the so-called president, Aslan Bzhania.
The agreement, pushed by the Kremlin and met with outrage among the local population, offered significant advantages to large Russian businesses, effectively threatening the survival of local entrepreneurship.
Amid the war against Ukraine, Russia lacks the resources to suppress protests in occupied Abkhazia. The Kremlin is now forced to accept a reduction in its influence over a previously fully controlled territory.
