The incident occurred at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal, where one of the berths is out of service.<\/p>\n<p>\u25ab\ufe0f On the day of the accident, August 29, russian officials claimed that the oil spill had been contained. However, satellite images now show that the contaminated area has reached a threatening size \u2013 350 sq. km. The slick is moving toward occupied Crimea, posing a risk to the Black Sea ecosystem and coastal tourist areas.<\/p>\n<p>This is already the second major oil spill in the Black Sea this year. Sanctions, equipment shortages, and technological limitations have pushed russia\u2019s oil infrastructure to a critical state.
