However, the real consequence of this initiative could be a systematic effort to isolate russians from the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>\u25ab\ufe0f In recent years, russian authorities have been gradually building a digital \u201ciron curtain\u201d: creating a \u201csovereign internet,\u201d blocking VPNs and Western messengers, and restricting access to foreign services and media. A ban on international calls is yet another step in this direction.<\/p>\n<p>Communication restrictions and increased control are classic features of authoritarian regimes.
