Arab media report that the current leader of Syria, Ahmad al-Sharaa, has appealed to putin to extradite Bashar al-Assad for trial over crimes against the Syrian people.<\/p>\n

Although neither russia nor Syria has officially criticized each other openly, russian propaganda outlets have recently begun sharply attacking the new Syrian leadership amid a surge of violence against Alawites in western Syria. The russians are trying to exploit the situation to push the narrative that russian presence in the country ensures the safety of minorities.<\/p>\n
The kremlin\u2019s attempts to preserve its military bases in Syria at any cost have placed it in a losing position, no matter the scenario. Extraditing Assad would reinforce russia\u2019s image as an unreliable partner for other Global South countries. On the other hand, cooperating with the new Syrian government could appear as befriending a regime that ru-propaganda itself accuses of terrorism.
