The repayments have been deferred to 2031-2036, covering a total of approximately $800 million.<\/p>\n<p>Postponing debt payments does not mean their cancellation. For this \u201cconcession\u201d from moscow, belarus will have to repay with even greater loyalty. The self-proclaimed president of belarus, alexander lukashenko, has spent years maneuvering between attempts to maintain formal independence and the necessity of making concessions to the kremlin, often at the expense of belarusian sovereignty. However, as debt increases, belarus\u2019s dependence on moscow will grow, leaving lukashenko with less and less room for maneuver.<\/p>\n<p>moscow is not demanding immediate repayment of the loans, as they serve as a convenient tool for exerting pressure on belarus.
