One of the latest victims of russian economic hurdles is russian railways, the state-owned monopoly responsible for rail transportation.

The company is forced to reduce its long-term investment program by over a third through 2030. Additionally, the government has proposed slashing funding for the Eastern Polygon project, which focuses on developing railway infrastructure in eastern russia, by almost sevenfold—from 3.84 trillion rubles to 558.7 billion rubles. These cuts come despite the project already lagging behind its intended schedule.

Following heavy sanctions and the loss of European markets, the kremlin announced a “pivot to the East,” aiming to strengthen trade ties with Asian countries. However, railway infrastructure in eastern russia has long been underdeveloped compared to other parts of the country and is ill-equipped to handle the anticipated increase in trade with Asia. To address this, massive investments were initially allocated for the development of the railroad on so-called Eastern Polygon.

russian dictator vladimir putin has repeatedly emphasized the “pivot to the East” as a cornerstone of moscow’s economic strategy. However, the recent need to cut funding for projects tied to this initiative signals deep problems for the kremlin. The war is forcing russia to prioritize military spending at the expense of its long-term strategic interests.

The Center has also reported that major businesses in russia are struggling under the strict financial policies of the Central Bank. A record increase in the key interest rate has left Samolet, the country’s largest real estate developer, on the brink of collapse. Additionally, the government has been forced to scale back its industrial subsidized mortgage program, which was originally launched to help businesses navigate economic instability during the war.

The russian government is struggling to keep its economy functioning amid the pressures of war and sanctions.
