After the Leipzig attack: Germany increases pressure on russia
Germany is stepping up efforts to counter russian influence and hybrid operations.
▫️Germany has announced the closure of the russian general consulate in Bonn and the termination of operations of the “russian house” in Berlin — an institution that, under the guise of cultural exchange, promotes russian narratives and interests abroad. Germany has also announced stronger sanctions and migration pressure on russia.
▫️The decisions come amid findings by German law enforcement agencies regarding russia’s involvement in the drone attack at Leipzig Airport on August 4. Following the investigation, the German side has attributed responsibility for the attack to russia. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the events in Leipzig fit into a broader pattern of russian hybrid operations in Europe.
moscow regularly uses sabotage and other hybrid methods as tools of pressure against European states. Targets include critical infrastructure, defense companies, and facilities linked to support for Ukraine.
The kremlin’s goal is to create a sense of insecurity, spread fear and distrust in societies, and fuel divisions in Europe over continued support for Ukraine. Countering this requires a joint effort: strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure and sanctions, and exposing russian hybrid operations.
