The russian minister of energy, sergey shmatko, and the Minister of Energy of Tajikistan, Daler Juma, signed an agreement to gradually cancel a debt of 25.3 billion rubles to the “Sangtudinskaya hpp-1” for electricity supply.
All of this happens against the backdrop of yet another tariff increase for russians starting July 1 — almost by 13%. kremlin once again shifts the financial burden of the war and sanctions onto ordinary citizens, while generously forgiving billions of dollars in debt to foreign “partners.”
Debt cancellation or deferral is not charity. This is how russia tries to play the role of a “great power,” while also maintaining control over other countries, preserving political influence and dependence.
Previously, kremlin deferred debt payments for belarus for seven years. Additionally, moscow enticed other countries to attend the “victory parade” held on May 9 in exchange for debt write-offs. Tajikistan was among the countries to whom the kremlin promised such a “bonus.”
