How the Kremlin eliminates all signs of disloyalty in russia
The russian authorities continue tightening the screws. The state duma has passed another package of draft laws supposedly aimed at “protecting sovereignty,” but in reality, they expand the state’s ability to repress any expression of disloyalty to the regime.
The new provisions broaden the grounds for labeling individuals as “foreign agents” and increase the number of criminal charges that can be applied in absentia. These include “spreading fake news about the russian army,” “calls for extremism” and “violations of russia’s territorial integrity”—which can apply to the non-recognition of russia’s occupation of Ukrainian territories—as well as “rehabilitation of nazism,” among others.
By intensifying repression and censorship, the kremlin is attempting to eliminate any criticism of putin’s regime and suppress all efforts by russian society to oppose the war of aggression against Ukraine.
