What Global South media write about Ukraine
The Center continues to monitor the information space in the Global South and identify narratives that serve the interests of the russian federation. In recent days, the key Ukraine-related topics have included:
– Statements by Donald Trump on peace negotiations in Ukraine;
– Prospects for ending the war;
– The summit of European leaders in Paris regarding support for Ukraine;
– A statement by v. putin about establishing so-called “temporary external governance” in Ukraine.
The statement by U.S. President Donald Trump, in which he accused v. putin of being unwilling to end the war against Ukraine and threatened tougher sanctions, received significant coverage in Global South countries. The position that russia is the one sabotaging peace negotiations is gaining broader support in the region.
At the same time, media outlets in most Global South countries increasingly express skepticism about the prospects for peace in Ukraine, despite continuing to support diplomatic resolution.
Chinese media have given almost no coverage to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to moscow or his meeting with v. putin. In contrast, russian media gave the visit considerable attention, emphasizing the deepening of bilateral ties and strategic partnership.
putin’s proposal to establish “external governance” in Ukraine under UN auspices has not received any meaningful support in Global South media.
